

Training Plans
Generic training plans are available everywhere online and in some cases they're pretty decent starting points, but what makes a truly great training plan? Well, for starters it needs to be built around the individual athlete and not a generic set of assumptions. After all, very few runners are identical in experience and ability. Next you need to understand any physical attributes or limitations an athlete might have eg: previous injuries, skills on certain terrains, how they respond to back-to-back sessions, what is their optimal recovery time for individual sessions based on intensity etc.
Next you need to fully understand their goals, what motivates them and ultimately what they're training for. A typical 50km undulating trail Ultra Marathon is a serious challenge, but entirely different to a 160km mountain Ultra Marathon on technical trails.

Then you need a granular understanding of what else the athlete has going on in their lives. Do they play football every Sunday, have a physically demanding career, limited training time with some weeks entirely written off etc etc etc. All these factors have a huge impact on what their training plan should look like because ultimately life goes on and your training needs to fit in around those inflexible pre-existing commitments.

Finally any good plan needs to be flexible, unforeseen things happen and a rigid inflexible plan can become not fit for purpose very quickly if it relies on 100% adherence.

So yes, you can find somewhat typical training plans online either free or with some customisation from apps and coaches.
